Peyton Manning is at the controls of an 11-0 Indianapolis Colts team that lost their head coach during the off-season and has been riddled with injuries. Manning has also been able to help the team overcome deficits late in games to win in ridiculous fashion. Drew Brees has cemented himself in the discussion for Top-QB in the NFL with Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. He, like Manning, is also at the helm of an 11-0 franchise. The Saints have been demolishing teams with ease. Brees is leading the most dangerous offense in the NFL today. Brett Favre is leading a 10-1 Vikings team and is having one of his best years ever at the age of 40. As much as I now hate the man, he is doing some really great things in Minnesota. I’ve never seen a player do better as he gets older (way older). Chris Johnson is making a push for the single season rushing record, he is one of three players in history to rush for 125 yards in five consecutive games. He also has more runs of over 85 yards (3) this season than any other player. Ever. Chris Johnson has almost no shot at getting the MVP award this season. Johnson is playing out of his mind and is having one of the best years a running back has had in quite a while, but the Titans didn’t win a game until Vince Young entered the line-up. The team is sitting at 5-6, which is remarkable after an 0-6 start but not good enough for him to garner serious consideration. In order for him to win MVP, he would have to break the single season rushing record, and the Titans would have to run the table and make the playoffs. It’s not impossible, but it’s highly unlikely. Brett Favre is playing the best football of his career. But he’s also playing with the best team he’s ever had. Adrian Peterson is the best running back in football, the Vikings have a top-5 offensive line, they have a top-10 overall defense (when healthy), and some very good weapons at wide receiver. I don’t think Brett Favre should win MVP this season. If you were to place Peyton Manning or Drew Brees in Minnesota, the Vikings would be far more dangerous than they are right now. Because the media loves Favre, and the fact that he’s having the best year of his career, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if he does end up winning NFL MVP. Down to my final two for NFL MVP – Drew Brees and Peyton Manning. There is no doubt that without either of these two, their teams would be completely different, and their offenses would likely be in shambles. The Saints are on their third left tackle, they have battled injuries at running back, their original starting two Corners have been battling injuries and they are yet to lose. The Colts have played much of their season without one of their starting Wide Receivers, without former Defensive Player of the Year Bob Sanders, and rookies starting at Corner and Wide Receiver. They haven’t lost either. It’s almost impossible to pick one over the other for MVP. Drew Brees has been blowing teams out of the water left and right. Peyton Manning has been throwing his team on his shoulders and bringing them back consistently. What is more valuable, a player that can give you a huge lead and helps you blow the opposition away, or a guy that can consistently bring you back no matter what the deficit is? I give Drew Brees kudos for everything he has done this year, but I have to believe that Peyton Manning is the Most Valuable Player in the National Football League this year. It’s always nice to be able to crush your opponent, but what happens when a team that is used to having the lead has to get into a dog fight? Are you sure you can win? The Colts and Peyton certainly know how to destroy a team, but Manning has consistently shown that he can always come out with the win no matter the situation. |
